Driftwood & Black

Artworks with wood and graphite

Trevor Davies and Vicki Redpath-Watson

28th April - 11th May 2024

Both qualified artists, Trevor and Vicki compose works using wood and graphite as well as conventional paper and paint.

Trevor says that he sometimes starts with an idea or a reaction to a mark or stain or a piece of found material. The human form appears as do the marks and artefacts bearing the imprint of human hands. Vicki’s practice is self-reflective and confessional, addressing long-standing concerns about her body image. Her prints use herself as a template, with unpredictable results.

This exhibition went on to Whitespace gallery in Edinburgh.

Chimene Taylor and Pat Hazzledine

Sky, Land and Sea

6th -20th April 2024

Sky, Land and Sea was an exhibition of glass sculptures by Chimene Taylor and landscape paintings by Pat Hazzledine.

Chimene’s works were inspired by nature, landscape and the concept of Wabi-sabi, accepting beauty that is imperfect, impermanent and incomplete in nature. Each piece was individually sculpted and fired and irregularities were gilded to bring out their beauty rather than trying to cover them up.

Pat, who loves living and working in Orkney, paints her home island of Shapinsay: scenes from the coast, cliffs, moorland and old farm buildings which have fallen into decay.

Looking North - Orkney Birds

Judith Hudson née Easton 1942 - 2019

16th March - 1st April 2024

From her early life in the south of England, Judith migrated further and further north, eventually settling on her beloved island of Hoy. She spent her day at her painting bench, under a northerly facing window, closely observing the many species of birds living on the island or migrating onwards. It was from here she translated her deep understanding of their forms, movements and colour into her artwork.

The proceeds from this exhibition are to be donated to Alzheimer’s Scotland.

Prints on the theme of Navigation

8th - 24th February 2024

The works in the windows are early explorations on the theme of navigation, loss and finding the way.   The compass rose and traverse board are both historical navigation aids based on artefacts from Stromness Museum.  The raven was used by early sailors as an aid to navigation.  Ravens were kept in cages on board and if the boat became lost they were released one at a time and the boat crew hoped that they would fly towards land and the boat aimed to follow the direction taken by the birds when all other options were lost. ‘Leviathan’ was an image arising from Sarah’s research into the grim history of whaling.
