Stromness is a seaport just inside Scapa Flow on the South West coast of Mainland Orkney. For a small town with only about 2000 inhabitants it has an extremely busy cultural life. There are four art galleries: three independents (including Northlight) and the Pier Arts Centre, which is home to one of the most important collections of British art in the UK. Throughout the year there is a rich mix of arts, crafts, music, drama and festivals. Orkney is famous for its ancient stone circles, burial chambers and stone-age village; The Heart of Neolithic Orkney is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
